A key part of the game is battles with monsters. Typically, a battle occurs when the party tile and the monster tile make contact in a location such as a dungeon. In rare cases you might need to force a battle to start using the A key followed by the arrow direction of the monster tile.
When a battle starts the party goes on to a battle map where each character is now displayed on the map. Each player gets a turn to move or attack with their weapon in hand using the A key followed by arrow direction. Paladins and Wizards can also cast spells in battle if they have the right magic points using the selected spell and the C button followed by arrow direction.
Battles are to the end. Meaning there is no escape from a battle – one side will win and the other will be defeated. This can have real consequences in the game as losing a player’s life when their hit points are at or below zero will remove that character from the party and autosave the game. Be wary just jumping into battles. The one exception is the Escape spell can be cast by a higher-level Wizard when in battle to move the party back to the Wilderness.
If you really do not like the autosave feature you can back up the Data folder before battles or before starting a new adventure.
If the party loses characters in battle, they will get new characters when the next adventure is created. If all three characters are defeated the adventure ends and a new party will have to be created.
Here are the available keys in battle:
Arrow or Space Keys: Move or skip a turn.
C: Cast the selected spell followed by the arrow direction.
A: Attack with the selected weapon followed by the arrow direction.
Monsters have one advantage in battle as they can move and attack on the diagonal. Since battles are chaotic, starting positions are randomized for both the players and monsters.
After the battle the party will receive gold and potentially other items that the monster party was carrying.
Use the system inventory to transfer Armor and Weapons to the party before a battle begins. You can also transfer a healing potion if you have one to a character in battle – they then will automatically use the healing potion to retore hit points followed by magic points.
There is a battle log that displays the results of an attack for both the players and monsters that you can use to see attacks were successful. When Hit Points or Magic Points get low you will also see a warning color on the selected character when their turn comes up.
